GEF iCOAST: Preparing the gender mainstreaming of projects
- Partner
- EBRD
- Duration
- 2025 - 2025
- Country
- Egypt, Turkey, Morocco
The aim of this project is to prepare the groundwork for future EBRD investment projects to be “Gender Additional”, meaning that they meaningfully contribute to enhancing women’s economic participation in the tourism sector. This includes increasing access to employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for women, as well as encouraging the tourism industry to better consider women as a distinct consumer segment. To this end, Enroot’s role could be articulated as follows: - Provide an overview of gender gaps in the tourism sector across Egypt, Morocco, and Türkiye, focusing on three key groups of women: (i) salaried workers, (ii) entrepreneurs, and (iii) tourists (e.g., solo travelers, women-led households), and identify the key barriers hindering their economic participation. - Identify opportunities for women in the sector, particularly those linked to the development of green and sustainability-related skills. - Define a shortlist of high-impact, feasible initiatives that can be integrated into future EBRD investment projects under the iCOAST programme. - Assess the willingness and capacity of private sector stakeholders to engage on gender and inclusion topics in the context of project implementation. - Provide practical guidance on how selected gender-responsive initiatives could be incorporated into projects, including through the use of concessional finance and technical assistance as tools to support behavioral and systemic change.
