MASAAR is Enroot’s flagship programme in Upper Egypt. It focuses on fostering an entrepreneurial mindset among youth and women, supporting the growth and development of SMEs, building the capacities of the business ecosystem, creating linkages to local and international markets, and advocating for policies that support the entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Seeds for the Future: Fostering Socioeconomic Empowerment of Women in Upper Egypt through Digital and Green Solutions Project 

The project aims to enhance the socio-economic empowerment, digital inclusion, and financial inclusion of women. The main goal is to enable women to engage in freelance and remote work opportunities in the digital/technological sector. This is tackled through enhancing their skills, creating an enabling environment, and providing them with relevant networks/opportunities. This contributes to boosting the employability skills of youth and women while contributing to the growth and development of the private sector and the creation of job opportunities. 

This project is funded by the European Union through the Spanish Cooperation in Egypt as part of the Women’s Empowerment Programme “Tamkeen.” Enroot is implementing this project component as part of its 100 Forsa Digital Empowerment Programme.

Enroot Impact Catalyst is implemented by Enroot as Impact Europe’s national partner in the framework of their regional programme “Impact Together!” funded by the European Union.

The project aims to create a robust ecosystem for impact investment in Upper Egypt through an acceleration program for small and medium enterprises, the creation of an investor network to promote their engagement with Upper Egyptian social entrepreneurs, capacity building programs for the social economy support ecosystem, and awareness-raising activities to highlight the potential of impact investment as a catalyst for driving sustainable economic development.

Helmak – Promotion of Sustainable Economic and Social Alternatives Based on Tourism in Upper Egypt, with special attention to women and young people 

The project aims to develop the tourism sector by supporting youth and women entrepreneurs in developing innovative social businesses, integrating local products and services in tourism value chains, fostering the inclusion of women in the labor market, building the capacities of service providers to meet international standards, and promoting underserved tourist attractions.

“Clime Up” Private Sector Promotion for the Agricultural Sector in Upper Egypt 

The project aims to enhance climate resilience and water-smart agriculture in Upper Egypt through private sector promotion and market system development. It focuses on improving  market access and finance of enterprises operating in the agribusiness sector, enhancing the socioeconomic conditions of small-holder farmers in Upper Egypt, promoting market linkages with international companies, and fostering climate resilience of agriculture value chains.

Enhanced Rural Incomes in Sohag through Market System Development

2020 - 2022

The project aimed to upgrade the loofah value chain in Tahta, Sohag, and empower the local community to utilise and capitalise on surrounding business opportunities. It supported the establishment of new businesses serving the value chain, fostered linkages between support organisations, built the productive capacities of facilities, and overall increased the aggregated value of the cluster. 

 

Results: 

  • 2,700 units/ feddan increase in Land Productivity 
  • 11 new business initiatives established 
  • 43% increase in the aggregated value of the cluster 
  • 7 partnerships established between NGOs 
  • 2 processing facilities received ISO Certifications
  • 80% increase in production capacity of facilities

Business Opportunity Mapping Studies

The BOMs are knowledge products that provide details of the governorate’s geographical landscape, its demographic and socioeconomic features, urban and key value chain analysis, and the implications of climate change on it. The BOMs utilize a market system development approach that highlights the potential opportunities and challenges in the predominant economic sectors. It informs and directs the design of capacity-building interventions and the creation of start-ups that address local market gaps, needs, and the real demand of the private sector.

GEF iCOAST: Preparing the gender mainstreaming of projects

The aim of this project is to prepare the groundwork for future EBRD investment projects to be “Gender Additional”, meaning that they meaningfully contribute to enhancing women’s economic participation in the tourism sector. This includes increasing access to employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for women, as well as encouraging the tourism industry to better consider women as a distinct consumer segment. To this end, Enroot’s role could be articulated as follows: - Provide an overview of gender gaps in the tourism sector across Egypt, Morocco, and Türkiye, focusing on three key groups of women: (i) salaried workers, (ii) entrepreneurs, and (iii) tourists (e.g., solo travelers, women-led households), and identify the key barriers hindering their economic participation. - Identify opportunities for women in the sector, particularly those linked to the development of green and sustainability-related skills. - Define a shortlist of high-impact, feasible initiatives that can be integrated into future EBRD investment projects under the iCOAST programme. - Assess the willingness and capacity of private sector stakeholders to engage on gender and inclusion topics in the context of project implementation. - Provide practical guidance on how selected gender-responsive initiatives could be incorporated into projects, including through the use of concessional finance and technical assistance as tools to support behavioral and systemic change.

Increasing Access to Skills and Employment for Youth and Women in the Agribusiness Sector in the Aswan Governorate

The project aims to design and implement a practical training programme for 120 individuals focused on sustainable post-harvest techniques. The training aims to improve product quality, reduce post-harvest losses, and support local agribusiness development. To ensure the training is tailored to the needs of the community and aligned with local dynamics, Enroot was commissioned in October 2024 to conduct the baseline needs assessment and to support the design and development of the training programme. The purpose of the baseline assessment is to establish a reference point for understanding the current state of the agriculture and agribusiness sectors in Aswan. It aims to identify sector-specific challenges, opportunities, and skill gaps across the agriculture and post-harvest value chains, with a particular focus on youth and women.

The primary goal of this initiative is to develop a comprehensive framework for assessing the impact of the UfM. This entails the following: 1. Defining tailored impact parameters and an impact assessment approach suited to the UfM's unique context 2. Identifying relevant evaluation criteria and establishing key performance indicators (KPIs). 3. The framework will also include a structured methodology for data collection, processing, and analysis, complemented by the selection of appropriate Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) digital tools to support its implementation. 4. Finally, a detailed manual will be developed, along with training the UfM staff to ensure they are equipped with the necessary skills to apply the methodology effectively.

Green Hackathon “Innovating for a Greener Tomorrow” in the Delta region, Egypt

The "Innovating for a Greener Tomorrow" Green Hackathon is an initiative designed to empower entrepreneurs in the Delta region to tackle pressing environmental challenges. The project is implemented by the National Solid Waste Management Program (NSWMP) /EU GREEN in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and organized by Enroot. The project is focused on two key governorates, namely 1) Kafr Elsheikh and 2) Gharbia, while being implemented in Kafr El Sheikh. This three-day event brought together 40 entrepreneurs from the Delta governorates, each presented creative solutions to environmental challenges, particularly in the solid waste management field. Participants received specialized training designed to support them develop their entrepreneurial ideas into innovative solutions, which was presented to a panel of experts. The top three projects received financial prizes to support the development of their businesses.
